Chapter 1 Installing the Faxmodem Your computer should be located near a telephone jack. CAUTION Before you start, touch a grounded metal surface other than your computer to discharge static electricity. Static electricity can damage computer and modem components. Locate your faxmodem’s serial number on the bot- 1 tom of the case. Write the number in the Impor- tant Information section on page 32. After the self-test, the front panel status lights or LEDs show the faxmodem’s current state. The MR light should be on, which shows the faxmodem is ready for use. For example, when you make a telephone call, the software inserts AT commands in a dial string before the telephone number you are calling. Problem: You type an AT command line and press En- ter, but your modem fails to execute the command line. Solution: Be sure you type AT at the beginning of the command line. Make sure the communications software is configured for the same serial port as your mo- dem. Be sure your modem is in terminal mode and not in data mode when you type the command.
