Compass Degrees North Arrow Compass Mode 3. The BackTrack starts out in Compass Mode the first time you turn it on. An arrow points North, and the display shows the direction you’re facing in degrees (e.g. East=90 degrees). The directional arrows work best in both Compass and Location Modes with the unit held horizontally or “flat” in front of you.
