After the first charge, the battery is typically fully charged overnight. 4 Check for dial tone. After the batteries are charged, pick up the handset and press P; you should hear a dial tone. 5 Set the dial mode. Even so, this handset and base can communicate over only a certain distance — which can vary with the locations of the base and handset, the weather, and the construction of your home or office.
