Flame failure safety feature Your cooktop has a flame failure safety device fitted. A metal probe behind the burner generates electricity when a flame is present. After 5 seconds the metal probe gets hot enough to hold a valve open and maintain the gas supply. If the flame is blown out then the gas to the burner is cut off.
