14-1226.fm Page 4 Friday, July 2, 1999 9:10 AM PREPARATION INSTALLING BATTERIES Your SCP-85 is powered by two AA batteries (not sup- plied). We recommend alkaline batteries (such as Ra- dioShack Cat. No. 23-557). You can also use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (Cat. No. 23- 125). If you use rechargeable batteries, you also need a battery charger (Cat. No. 23-133). Cautions: • Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of batteries (standard, alkaline, or nickel-cadmium), or re

Install the batteries as indicated by the polarity sym- bols (+ and –) marked inside cover. 4. Close the battery compartment cover and the cas- sette compartment’s door and cover. Cautions: • Never leave dead or weak batteries in the SCP-85. • If you do not plan to use the SCP-85 for a month or more, remove the batteries. • Dispose of batteries properly; do not bury or burn them. Replace the plug when you remove the headphones or speakers from the SCP-85. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. • Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. • Do not listen

Then you can quickly tune to a stored station +5 by pressing a memory button (or and a memory but- ton). Follow these steps to store stations in memory. RADIO ON/OFF 1. Press to turn on the radio. The dis- play shows the current radio station’s frequency. BAND 2. Press until the display shows AM or FM. 3. Tune to the first station you want to

See “Using Head- phones or Speakers” on Page 6. 1. Push open the cassette compartment’s cover, then push open the cassette compartment’s door. 2. Take up any slack in the cassette tape by turning its hub with your finger or a pencil. If you do not remove excess slack, the tape might become tangled in the play mec

Insert the cassette tape into the cassette compart- ment with the desired side facing you, the full reel to the right, and the open end facing up. 4. Close the cassette compartment’s door and cover. 5. Press PLAY to play the tape. Notes: • After playing to the end of each side, the tape automatically changes direction to play the other side. • To manually change the tape’s direction to play the other side, switch DIR to the other position. 16

14-1226.fm Page 19 Friday, July 2, 1999 9:10 AM TAPE TIPS AND TECHNIQUES CLEANING THE TAPE-HANDLING PARTS Dirt, dust, or particles of the tape’s coating can accumu- late on the tape heads and other parts that the tape touches. This can greatly reduce the performance of the SCP-85. Use the following cleaning procedure after ev- ery 20 hours of operation. 1. Open the cassette compartment cover and door. 2. Open the battery compartment cover. 3. Remove the batteries. 4. Press PLAY to expose the

RESTORING TAPE TENSION AND SOUND QUALITY After you play a cassette several times, the tape might become tightly wound on the reels. This can cause play- back sound quality to deteriorate. To restore the sound quality, fast-forward the tape from the beginning to the end of one side, then completely re- wind it. Then loosen the tape reels by gently tapping each si
